Heritage scaffolding for the church home to Europe's oldest tree — a 5,600-year-old yew.
Defynnog Church, near Brecon in the Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog), is home to what is believed to be the oldest tree in Europe — a yew tree estimated to be over 5,600 years old. When the church required restoration works, Trust Scaffolding was brought in to provide scaffolding access for this uniquely sensitive heritage project.
Working around a building of such historical significance required exceptional care. The scaffolding had to be designed and erected without causing damage to the ancient stonework, and particular attention was paid to protecting the grounds and the remarkable yew tree during the works.
Heritage scaffolding projects demand a different approach to standard commercial work. Load points, fixing methods, and access routes all need to be carefully considered to avoid damage to the building fabric. Our team worked closely with the heritage conservation team to ensure the scaffolding met both safety standards and heritage protection requirements.
The Defynnog Church project was a privilege to work on — a reminder that scaffolding is not just about new construction, but about preserving the buildings and landmarks that connect us to our history. It also demonstrated our willingness to travel beyond our core South Wales area for the right projects.
